Channel 5's The Drowning sees Jill Halfpenny take lead role in tense new thriller

Jill Hallfpwnny is set to have viewers gripped as she takes a lead role in tense new TV thriller The Drowning.

The drama series, which was in production in Ireland right before coronavirus hit last year, focuses on a mother who thinks she has caught a glimpse of her son who went missing nine years ago.

Jill will take the leading role of the mother in question, Jodie, who "commits to a dangerous and transgressive path" after thinking she's spotted her child.

The Drowning cast also includes Line of Duty and The Bay star Jonas Armstrong, who will play Jodie's brother Jason and Rupert Penry-Jones, from Whitechapel, who takes on the role of Mark, the dad of the boy Jodie believes is her son.

The first trailer for the new series was teased by producer and former Adulthood star Noel Clarke on his Twitter on Monday, with him posting: "Our show #TheDrowning is coming soon to @channel5_tv YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS IT"

Sharing it on her social media, Jill wrote:"Coming very very soon"

After watching the teaser, one of her followers responded: "This looks so good - can’t wait!" and another replied: "Omg I’m EXCITED!!!!"

The Drowning is tipped to air over four consecutive nights on Channel 5 next month and is written by Tim Dynevor – the real-life husband of Coronation Street's own Sally Webster and dad of Phoebe Dynevor, the young actress who plays Daphne in Netflix smash hit Bridgerton.

Jill's previous acting credits include Byker Grove, EastEnders, Waterloo Road, Liar, Ordinary Lies and Dark Money.

And she is also still a firm favourite with fans of Strictly Come Dancing, following her memorable triumph on the show back in 2004.
