Channel 5 mum Nicole from Who Needs A Man - 'We are not trying to live up to a stereotype'

Who Needs A Man When You've Got A Spray Tan is returning to our TV screens tonight.

Channel 5 bosses pulled the documentary series last minute on March 7, after airing just one episode, although a second is available online.

But the controversial programme is back and ahead of its return, the ECHO spoke to 26-year-old Nicole, who features on the show.

The first episode saw the mum-of-one coming to terms with her new status as a single mum after splitting from her boyfriend.

Speaking about the tough breakup, Nicole said she was shocked when it happened: "No one has a child thinking they're going to be a single parent in a few months.

"I was just saying to myself - 'This has actually happened'."

Nicole continued: "It’s not the same as a normal break-up, with kids it’s different.

"I've got to factor that he will always be in her life, but until she is 18, he is going to be in my mine.

"We wanted to make sure we were making the right decision for Alysia - we want her to aim to have a healthy relationship."

But when the first instalment aired and Nicole told her story, it was met with a large amount of criticism.

Users online commented on Twitter, calling the programme 'a parody' and 'cringe-worthy'.

And it was also suggested that the programme was enforcing negative stereotypes of Liverpool women.

But hitting back, Nicole said that the mum's on the show are not trying to live up to any stereptypes.

TOWIE fans hit back at online trolls laying in to new stars after just two episodes

She said: "You know that's just Liverpool, we do go into the ASDA in our pyjamas, we need to just celebrate what Liverpool is and accept it.

"I feel the people that commented had not watched the programme and had made their own assumptions, but it’s about empowering women - we are not trying to live up to a stereotype."

She continued: "But you can’t argue with people on the internet, it’s impossible but I would say that you're the one watching our lives, don’t call us names, that’s the lifestyle we’re in."

For Nicole starring in the show was a way to break the stigma around single parenting in Liverpool.

She said: "I work part-time and as hard as I can to provide for my daughter Alysia.

"I wasn’t expecting anything from appearing on the show. I just wanted to get it out there that single mums can cope.

"I wanted to do the show so people feel like they are not alone and can relate in some sort of way.

"All I want is for Alysia to grow up being proud of me, I don’t want her to think that I didn't do enough."
