Channel 4 viewers stunned as couple spend £2000 on just one museum trip

A family were left stunned as they realised that had spent a huge £2,000 on a single trip to a transport museum.

Couple Kerrie and Ian Fitzgibbon were shocked to learn during an episode of Channel 4's Secret Spenders that they had spent a huge £2,000 on their local transport museum, as they desperately looked at ways they could save money.

In the pandemic, Kerrie lost her job - and the pair had still been spending as if they had two salaries coming in, all whilst they wanted to save money in order to have a loft extension done to their home.

Now wanting to make a bedroom in the loft for their daughter, the pair were keen to find out how they could save some money - with the extension thought to be costing them around the £35,000 mark.

Their yearly income sits at around £39,000 as dad Ian has a job as an IT engineer, but before the pandemic hit and Kerrie lost her job, the family had around double that to play with.

"He’s a bit of a shopaholic. He’s got his interests but they are expensive interests. He still wants to get nice things as if we’re both earning but we’re not. I want to be able to save money," Kerrie explained of her husband's spending.

He likes to collect high value items including vinyl records and train memorabilia as well as spoiling his kids. He is also a keen purchaser at auctions, which can become quite costly too.

However, it was the revelation about the transport museum that shocked viewers.

Kerrie explained: "We went as a family once and it’s not really my thing so I was like 'Get me out of here,'" as finance expert Peter Komolafe revealed they had bought a VIP ticket membership that was actually costing them £2,000 a year.

Both of them were shocked by the news as Kerrie said: "If I had known that would’ve been cancelled a long time ago!"

The expert was also concerned about Ian's spending on auction sites, as they revealed he was spending around £100 per month on the site after seeing things he liked on there.

"You know what it’s like, logic goes out the window when you bid and you end up spending more than you actually intended," he admitted as he confessed he loved an auction site.
