Channel 4 viewers distracted as Anne Robinson is announced as new Countdown host

Channel 4 viewers were distracted on Monday as Anne Robinson was announced as the new Countdown host.

Her identity was revealed on talk show Steph's Packed Lunch after the show teased her name to viewers with a Countdown conundrum.

The former The Weakest Link host will replace Nick Hewer after he announced he would be stepping down after nearly 10 years in the hot seat.

Anne will join mathematician Rachel Riley and lexicographer Susie Dent as the first female host of the Channel 4 daytime show.

But while host Steph McGovern and Anne chatted on the show, Steph's Packed Lunch viewers were distracted by Anne's backdrop.

The 76-year-old presenter, from Crosby, appeared on the show in what looks like an office room with pictures of herself in the background as well as a whole load of files.

TV critic and broadcaster Scott Bryan tweeted a picture of Anne and wrote: "Anne Robinson's study is quite something," before adding: "she's *literally* got the receipts."

One person asked: "Does she not know about books?" to which another joked: "She’s filed them all."

Another said: "Why does she live in the accounts department of an 80s company?"

In a nod to her game show past, a third said: "Is that her collection of Weakest Link insults?"

Anne said of joining Countdown: "I am beyond thrilled to be joining Countdown. The show is almost as old as I am and just as historic.

"I am particularly excited to be working alongside the show’s two other formidable women.

"Worryingly, Susie and Rachel are not only very smart but younger, prettier and thinner than me.

"Sadly, there's no time for another facelift so I'll have make do with this old one.

"Three Clever Girls Do Countdown! Don’t you love the sound of that?

"I am a crossword nut so the Countdown’s conundrums I can make sense of.

"But the adding up and taking away – I can't go much further than working out the fee once my agent takes his cut."
