Channel 4 series 'Letters in Lockdown' to feature NI teen's heartwarming letter to NHS hero mum

A Northern Ireland teenager is set to feature as part of a brand new Channel 4 series 'Letters in Lockdown'.

The new short form series from Belfast based company Afro-Mic Productions will launch this Friday on Channel 4’s All4.

Letters In Lockdown tells the story of six young people from across the UK who have been inspired to write letters of love, pride or apology in an attempt to reconnect with those they care about during lockdown.

Those featured in the episodes come from all corners of the UK, with Northern Ireland represented by Emma Caddell, who writes a heartwarming letter to her mum, a front line NHS worker.

The 16-year-old from Craigavon explained why she wanted to take part in the series.

"I've never told her that she is my hero before so I thought writing a letter explaining how much she means to me would be a nice way to do it.

"Now that people really need the NHS more than ever she is only really getting the gratitude now which she probably should have been getting years ago."

In the moving episode, Emma puts pen to paper to tell her mum, who has had to move out of the family home to protect herself and her family, just how much she means to her.

She writes: "Every NHS worker is doing something amazing right now, putting their own lives at risk to help others.

"We know what you're doing is heroic but it's scary for us as your kids, I know how this virus can impact the human body and you are subjecting yourself to it. You are doing something unimaginable and brave... I can't wait to hug you when this is all over."

Celebrities, Kieron Richardson from Hollyoaks and Radio One presenter Clara Amfo, also feature in the series which is directed by Stephen Pierce, from Lisburn.

Managing director of Afro-Mic, Emma-Rosa Dias explained: “When we put the initial call out for contributors between (13-18 years old) we were amazed at the response.

Explaining the thought process behind the series letter writing theme, Emma-Rosa told us: “When I was younger writing letters was a big part of everyday life. A great way to express yourself and often an act of kindness.

"I hope our programme Letters in Lockdown will not only reconnect teens with loved ones, but also promote letter writing to a new generation of youngsters even after lockdown.”

Letters In Lockdown airs online on All 4 this Friday, June 12.

"Not only did we get hundreds of applications from Northern Ireland alone, the stories people told us about life in lockdown were extraordinarily positive considering we were all facing such a difficult time.”
