Channel 4's Ugly House to Lovely House slammed for splashing £300K on 'bland' result

Home makeover fans tuning in to watch Channel 4’s Ugly House to Lovely House were left unimpressed when they saw a dated home transformed into an equally band one - at the cost of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Furthermore, viewers couldn’t quite believe that the home refurbishment had a budget of more than quarter of a million pounds - and the home owners didn’t seem to bat an eyelid when the project went over budget by £40,000.

A couple named Lucas and Hayley were branded as “unrelatable” when they waved through a job cost increase to £300,000 from £260,000 without wincing.

The online fashion business owners were expanding their 1970s designed home in Essex to make it fit for the 21st century, but many tuning in to the show thought the way the couple splashed the cash meant the show had lost it’s accessibility.

Fans took to Twitter in droves to vent their fury at the show losing what had made it special by showcasing a transformation by a couple who already had budgets many could only dream of - with some pointing out the fact that the home had been bought for £665,000 before extension work had even begun.

“Sometimes I think people just go on this programme to show how much wealth they have - why pay 655k on a house that isn’t suitable in the first place, then throw another 300k at it?!” one fan grumbled.

“Does anyone ever have a reasonable sized budget of say, I dunno, under £50K?” griped another viewer.

Explaining why they wanted to transform the house, the couple explained they were doing it for their children.

“It's tired and drab, it just lets the street down. It's safe to say this wasn't our dream home,” Hayley revealed.

Some of the flaws before the makeover included a leaking conservatory and the fact that the two-floor building only had one bathroom.

By the end of the project, the slightly dilapidated structure had been transformed into a much more enticing design - with clay tile cladding coating the exterior.

There was a huge extension, skylights galore, and a giant open plan kitchen with french doors leading to the garden - making the property much more attractive.

Show host George Clarke congratulated the pair on their project, saying: “I think that's staggering value for money, you basically have a whole new house.”
