Channel 4’s controversial, curtailed documentary Immigration Street drew 1.4 million viewers on Tuesday night.

The film about the inhabitants of Derby Road in Southampton was condensed from a six-part series into a one-off after the film-maker Love Productions ran into opposition from locals.

But the publicity around the hour-long show, which kicked off at 10pm, helped it to achieve almost double the usual slot average and an audience share of almost 8%, according to unofficial overnight figures.

During the last 15 minutes of the programme, the audience share peaked at 9.9% – probably fuelled by it being a top-trending topic on Twitter during transmission.

Immigration Street beat BBC2’s Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience – which was seen by 800,000 viewers – and was just behind ITV’s News at Ten, which scored 1.6 million. Over on BBC1, the 10pm bulletin drew an audience of 4.3million.

At 9pm on BBC2, the final part of the ground-breaking political documentary Inside the Commons pulled in 1.5 million viewers and almost 7% audience share.

All ratings are Barb overnight figures, including live, +1 (except for BBC channels) and same day timeshifted (recorded) viewing, but excluding on demand, or other – unless otherwise stated. Figures for BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 generally include ratings for their HD simulcast services, unless otherwise stated
