Channel 4 postpone new 'Smuggled' documentary after Essex lorry deaths

Channel 4 is postponing the broadcast of a documentary about people smuggling after the tragic deaths of 39 men and women.

The bodies of the Chinese nationals were discovered on Wednesday, October 23 in the back of a lorry in Essex and police have launched a murder investigation.

In light of the tragic events, the broadcaster, which has set up has pulled its new series Smuggled from the schedule until further notice.

The show followed eight members of the public as they attempted to enter the UK from Europe by evading border checks.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "In light of the tragic events today we have postponed the transmission of the series."

The broadcaster had commissioned the show at a time when the UK was preparing to "take back control" with Brexit.

Promotional material described the series as an "unprecedented national security experiment".

A press screening was scheduled to be held on Thursday but it was cancelled after the discovery of the bodies in the early hours of Wednesday.

39 Chinese nationals were found in the refrigerated trailer of a truck.

Essex Police had initially suggested the lorry could be from Bulgaria, but later, officers said they believed it had entered into the UK from Belgium.

The lorry was found at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, where 38 adults and one teenager were pronounced dead at the scene.

China's foreign ministry confirmed the information and said "nothing could be released as of now".

It is feared the 31 men and eight women all froze to death inside the trailer where temperatures are said to get as low as -25C.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old driver - named locally as Mo Robinson of Portadown, Co Armagh - on suspicion of murder and raided three properties in Northern Ireland.
