Channel 4 News banned from Nigel Farage Brexit Party events for six weeks

The editor of Channel 4 News has confirmed that the broadcaster is currently banned from covering Nigel Farage's Brexit Party events.

In a tweet, Ben de Pear said the ban has been imposed for six weeks, and follows an investigation by Channel 4 News into Farage's finances.

The Brexit Party was founded in April by the former UKIP leader and is now leading the polls for the upcoming European elections.

Channel 4 News, which will relocate its headquarters to Leeds in 2020, exposed details of the money he'd allegedly received from millionaire insurance tycoon Arron Banks to the tune of nearly half a million pounds in 2016.

Farage refused to confirm or deny those claims during a public appearance on May 16.

Questions have also been raised over the financing of the party, with some suggestions it was receiving foreign donations. This has since prompted an investigation by the Electoral Commission over the legality of its funding.

In response Nigel Farage insisted his Brexit Party has not accepted any funding in foreign currency. He told The Guardian: "We’ve got a different model; we don’t have a traditional members model. We are doing it differently."

Ben de Pear says Channel 4 News 'hopes to resolve the access ban as soon as possible'.
