Channel 4 Murder Island: Viewers react to 'confusing' first episode of Ian Rankin mystery

The anticipated murder mystery reality TV show kicked off tonight (October 5) on Channel 4.

Ameture detectives have been put on a small Scottish island to solve a murder and whoever guesses right wins a cash price of £50,000.

But it won't be an easy case to solve as Edinburgh tartan noir writer Ian Rankin has written the mystery and calls it 'his most twisted yet.'

On a fictional Scottish island called Hirsa, Charey Hendricks has been murdered in her home but despite a small population, the detectives soon realise there is more to this story than first appeared.

The first episode had a mixed response as it gripped many viewers as relationships and plot twists came to the surface but the format confused others.

One wrote on social media: :"I’m not getting this too clunky it’s like a mix of love island, apprentice and hunted it doesn’t work hasn’t grabbed me."

"I’m soooo confused right now! Like is it me or does this programme just not work"

A third disgruntled viewer added: "Not sure about this; it's like a police training exercise so far. Will there be enough drama, will there be a sense of competition? I know we need to give it time to develop, but it seems to be neither one thing nor the other at the moment."

But on the other hand, many fans could only think of one person who could suss out the murder.

Of course, everyone's favourite sofa sleuth, Jenny from Gogglebox.

One said: "Murder Island looks fantastic! Can imagine Jenny from Gogglebox sitting on the sofa with her notebook and pen out as she did for Line of Duty"

Another added: "Can't wait for Jenny and her notepad on Gogglebox"

"Anyone else writing notes?" A another fan posted.

Murder Island is on Channel 4 at 9.30pm and catch up on All4
