Channel 4 issues Gogglebox update amid national mourning period

Channel 4 has issued an update regarding the season premiere of Gogglebox amid heavily amended TV schedules in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The nation is mourning after Her Majesty died at Balmoral yesterday aged 96. Channel 4 has announced a schedule shake up as an extended edition of the network's news programme will air from midday.

The Last Leg has also been pulled from the schedule with host Adam Hills announcing "it didn't feel right" in the wake of The Queen's death.

On Friday, a number of Gogglebox stars paid heartfelt tributes to the late Queen. Izzi Warner said: "They don't make them like this anymore, rest in peace your majesty."

Jenny Newby and Lee Riley commented: "We are absolutely gutted of the passing of the greatest leader this country will ever see. You’ve guided this county through all of our lives. Rest in peace our Queen xx" Daniel Lustig posted: "You may rest now our queen . You have always been an inspiration."

Abbie Lynn and Georgia Bell both shared snaps of Her Majesty alongside heartbroken emojis. Fans have taken to social media to express hope the show will still air tonight.

Rhianna posted: "I hope @C4Gogglebox do a special show for the Queen tonight", while Corinne tweeted : "I’m very sorry but I need #Gogglebox to be on tonight" and Alice added: "Any news on #Gogglebox tonight?"

Channel 4 has now confirmed the 20th series of Gogglebox will begin tonight as scheduled. In a statement, the broadcaster said: "Channel 4 has made significant changes to our schedule, including added extended news coverage, to ensure that Channel 4 is respectful following the news from Buckingham Palace about the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

"Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this. Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers."
