Channel 4 Great British Bake Off fans gutted as baker leaves after 'wobbly' cake disaster

The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) returned to our screens tonight for another episode which was bound to leave us on the edge of our seats - and even more so now with Custard Week on the horizon.

First up in the tasks was to create île flottante - or a floating island. This is a classic French dessert consisting of poached meringue floating on crème anglaise (a vanilla custard).

Kevin's attempt was going well until he began to poach the meringue causing them no not hold together as they should with the baker calling them "rough" looking.

When it came to judgement time, Paul said the prosecco has caused the islands to collapse but the flavours were all there. Thankfully both Paul and Pure loved it despite the slight collapse.

Up next, the technical challenge and this time the bakers were in for a real shock with a staggered start and finish time to make it "fair when judging" according to Paul.

Sandro was up first with him being tasked to make pistachio and praline ice cream with a chocolate and pistachio dipped cone.

Later we saw Kevin enter the tent and he fared pretty well with Paul and Prue agreeing that it was a good attempt with a good wafer and tasty ice cream. However it was melting a little too quickly which in the end, put him in third place with Maxy in second and Sandro coming in first place.

In the final challenge, the bakers had to make a set custard gâteau with multiple baked layers with perfect set custard expected.

In this round, Kevin decided to opt for a 3 layer stack which was to be decked with nectarines and raspberries with the gâteau topped with raspberry jelly and finished with a cascading swirl of meringue buttercream, prosecco infused macarons and bay leaves.

Kevin sadly left the tent. (Channel 4/Great British Bake Off.)

As he was stacking it together for the final presentation, his bake was looking slightly "wobbly" and it soon began to fall apart. The dowels weren't sturdy enough and instead he chose to display the three layers across two display cake stands to prevent anything else from going wrong.

When it came to the taste test, the judges said it was "amazing and unusual" and the "longer you have it in your mouth the better it tastes". Despite the messy presentation, they loved the flavours and said the leaves complimented it well.

But sadly, as with every episode, one person had to leave the tent. Taking star baker was Syabira whilst it was Kevin who was sent home.

Taking to Twitter, viewers were sad to see the Lanarkshire man leave the show.

One said: "Kevin. You are incredible."

Another added: "'My heart's melting, I've grown such a fondness towards Kevin and now he's gone but congrats to Syabira again, truly deserved!!!"

"Noooooo Kevin" a third tweeted followed by crying emojis - summing up how we all feel.

A fourth added: "You did amazing Kevin. From one Scot from Lanarkshire to another."
