Channel 4 executive explains why Gogglebox doesn't have a Scottish family

Fan favourite show Gogglebox hasn't had a Scottish family on for five years due to "production difficulties", according to Channel 4 's Chief Executive.

Alex Mahon spoke to MPs at the Scottish Affairs Committee on Monday and was faced with complaints over a lack of Scottish families appearing on the popular programme.

The award-winning show features a group of regular TV viewers, usually families or friends and films them reacting to a range of programming.

The successful show has now been running for 17 seasons, but across this year has been struck with tragedy as three cast members have passed away and another five won't be returning to the newest season.

During the session earlier this week, Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross raised the concern over the lack of Scots guests and asked why there have been none since 2016.

Mahon explained that: “We do get complaints about the lack of representation on Gogglebox which is one of our biggest shows,” and described the issue as a “continued pressure”.

Ross made the jokingly suggested he and his wife could be cast members to ease production difficulties - but after the room erupted in laughter, he concluded it wasn't a viable option.

Mahon explained: “It would be better to have a Scottish family, I know from previously investigating, we haven’t yet both found a family and superseded our production difficulties on it.

“But it is a goal for us to do that and I think you are right to flag there is a lack of representation on that show.”

Channel 4 commissioning editor Deborah Dunnett explained part of the problem was related to the “really fast turn around” on the show.

Ross called these claims were excuses as he said: “That sounds like complete rubbish.”

He told the TV executives: “You have spent an hour today so far speaking about how great Channel 4 is because you get to all most remote parts of Scotland.

“Yet we can’t get clips to a family in Glasgow or Edinburgh or Perth or Moray or anywhere like that."

Hopefully in the future seasons of Gogglebox, Scots fans will be able to see a family from North of Hadrian's wall on the show.
