Channel 4 drama The Undeclared War starring Mark Rylance is being filmed in Barry

Film crews have arrived in Barry for the production of a new Channel Four drama.

The crew set up in a car park near Whitmore Bay in Barry on Tuesday for the new series called The Undeclared War starring Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg.

Vale of Glamorgan Council said filming will take place on Barry Island, which was famously used for the TV series Gavin and Stacey, and within Barry Rail Depot.

The Undeclared War will be a six-part drama series by seven-time Bafta winner Peter Kosminsky who was behind Wolf Hall and The Government Inspector.

Stars include Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, Adrian Lester, Alex Jennings, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Hannah Khalique-Brown and it is being produced by Playground.

It will be set in 2024 in the run up to a British general election.

Kosminsky said: “The series is based deep within the least-known arm of the UK’s intelligence infrastructure, GCHQ. The story we’re now able to tell casts an extraordinary, revelatory light on the hot, undeclared war taking place right now in the world’s newest and most invisible domain of conflict – cyber.”

Caroline Hollick, head of Channel 4 Drama, said: “Peter Kosminsky is a titan of British television drama, and it’s a privilege to have this ground-breaking thriller on Channel 4 – it’s a truly momentous series which will change the way we see the world around us. I’m also delighted to have such stellar names in the cast, as well as the chance to break brand-new on-screen talent”.

The filming locations

  • Part of Nells Point Car Park: 4pm, May 9 until 10pm on May 12 (the remainder of the car park is open as usual)

  • Huts 1-12 of Barry Island Beach Huts: 6am-8pm on May 11

  • Barry Island Promenade: 6am-8pm on May 11 (The Promenade remains open for visitors)

  • Eastern end of Whitmore Bay: 6am-8pm on May 12

  • J-sub, Barry Rail Depot, Hood Road: 8am-6pm on May 11 and 6am-8pm on May 12

Residents affected by the filming have already been contacted and the council confirmed no roads will need to be closed.

The council said stunts are being coordinated at several locations.

Whitmore Bay is a popular location for filming crews and was used earlier this year for Doctor Who .

Actor Jodie Whittaker, who plays the Doctor, was seen filming alongside a ‘weeping angel’ alien with the series due to air some time this year.
