Changes to traffic free seafront scheme in Portishead have been announced

Portishead seafront is to remain a traffic free zone for now following a review by council highways chiefs.

Barriers were put up at both ends of Esplanade Road earlier this summer to provide more space for social distancing.

The move meant all the parking spaces along The Esplanade were out of use.

Following a review of the temporary restrictions, North Somerset Council has decided to keep them in place to support social distancing.

However there will be some tweaks to the scheme with additional disabled parking put in place.

Additional disabled parking spaces will be added facing the sea next to the temporary barriers at the Lake Road/Esplanade Road Junction nearest to Beach Road West.

The Kilkenny Fields and Lido car parking will be signposted.

North Somerset Council executive member for highways Councillor James Tonkin said: “Our priority continues to be the health of our residents and social distancing plays a key role in this.

“As a result, the temporary road closure will remain in place for the time being but we have listened to the feedback received and acted accordingly."

The review comes at the same time as people are being asked their views on the possibility of The Esplanade becoming traffic free permanently.

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans has put together a survey asking people what they think of the changes made to help people adhere to social distancing guidelines.

The Space to Move survey covers locations across the UK,including the towns of Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead where a number of measures have been put in place.

People across the UK are being invited to add their scheme and give feedback on it.

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: “Sustrans is running a survey to find out what people think about the changes we’ve made to allow for safer social distancing across North Somerset, including Portishead Esplanade.

“We will use this information to help inform future decision making.”
