Changes to Nottinghamshire polling stations for May elections to avoid school closures

Schools across Nottinghamshire will not be used as polling stations in the upcoming local elections to ensure no more classroom time is lost.

Dozens of schools across the county are regularly used as designated polling stations on election day, forcing the site to close for the day.

However, following calls for changes to the system for the May 6 elections, local authorities across the county have revealed alternative polling stations across their area.

It follows months of lost contact time for pupils nationwide due to various Covid lockdowns, with schools only reopening to all students on March 8.

Central Government, headteachers and Nottinghamshire County Council have led the calls for changes to school polling stations, ahead of the council's election and the vote for police and crime commissioner.

Mansfield usually uses 11 primary schools as polling stations for elections, however, all sites have been found alternative venues.

Hayley Barsby, Mansfield's deputy returning officer and council chief executive said: "This action recognises the impact on students and parents of a further day of school closures and home schooling in a year in which education has been severely affected due to the various national lockdowns.

"We will look again at which premises we use as polling stations following the review of ward boundaries by the Boundary Commission later this year."

The decision across Nottinghamshire also takes into account the unavailability of some previously used polling places, which have also been moved to nearby locations.

Below is a list of all the changes to polling stations across various areas Nottinghamshire. Broxtowe and Newark and Sherwood councils did not respond to our request.
