Changes to North and South Lanarkshire school holidays because of VE Day celebrations

Parents and carers across Lanarkshire are being advised about a change of date to a public holiday this year.

When the original list of council school holidays was issued last year,  the first Monday in the month of May - Monday, May 4, 2020 - was listed as the first May Day bank holiday.

However, this has now been changed to Friday, May 8, 2020 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the VE Day celebrations, on the same day.

This means schools across South Lanarkshire will now be closed on Thursday, May 7, for the listed in-service day and Friday, May 8, for the bank holiday.

In neighbouring North Lanarkshire, schools will close on Friday, May 8 (for VE Day) and Monday, May 11 (in-service).

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe.

The holiday will form part of a three-day weekend of commemorative events.

The bank holiday at the end of May will remain the same with schools in both South and North Lanarkshire closed on Friday, May 22 and Monday, May 25.
