Changes to Irish betting laws sees maximum machine bets set at €5

Amendments to the country’s new gaming legislation has seen proposed wager limits set at €5 instead of €10.

And the most you can win off a machine that is supposed to be for amusement only has been capped at €500 instead of €750.

The limits are included in the Gaming and Lotteries Bill 2019, which came before Cabinet again on Tuesday night.

There were concerns that the higher limits would encourage more reckless gambling, especially among those that may be susceptible to problem gambling.

The limits only apply to machines, with the bookmaking and multibillion euro sports betting industries remaining relatively unregulated.

Another proposal that came through the Oireachtas committee stage of the legislation scrutiny banning bookies from taking bets on the Lotto has been dropped.
