Changes agreed to cut congestion in Swansea's busy Parc Tawe car park

People visiting Parc Tawe Retail Park will soon be able to drive in from two directions, after years of having only one way in and out of the busy car park.

Swansea Council has granted permission for plans for a new ingress only access road to be created from Quay Parade into Parc Tawe.

It will be entry only, located between the two avenue trees on the left hand side of the A4067, just past the gantry sign, as pictured further down in this article.

A delegated decision report, put together by the council's planning authority, states that whilst not specifically stated in the application, the works are being carried out as part of the new Aldi retail development which is set to move into the old Toys R Us.

It states: "This permission has now been implemented in order to provide a more commercially viable and appealing asset and in order to attract tenants to the development.

"The longer term aspiration for Parc Tawe is to create a new residential district, which is well connected to adjacent communities and business areas and complemented by associated environmental enhancements and appropriate supporting commercial uses."

Parc Tawe's sole access has often been the scene of congestion in the past, for traffic both entering and leaving, especially at busy times.

Documents state that the purpose of the new access is to "provide the park with a greater level of accessibility by all modes of transport and to assist in relieving the pressure on the current site access off Plantasia which is known to suffer with capacity issues."

It adds that the proposal would be "to the benefit of highway safety".

It acknowledges that it would cross a shared footway and cycleway, but adds: "The access has been designed to ensure the footway/ cycleway runs uninterrupted and has therefore been designed consistent with the route across the Strand."
