Change UK MP Joan Ryan 'channels David Brent' with 'look at your hands' speech

This is the moment Change UK MP Joan Ryan “channels David Brent” at a campaign rally as she urges audience members to “look at their hands”.

In her speech at the Change UK event at Bath Cricket Club, the Labour defector said, with deadpan seriousness: “Can you just look at your hands, please?

“You’re really good, you’re doing that ever so well! That’s the best I’ve seen it done, brilliant.”

And referring to next week’s European elections, she explained: “That’s it, it’s there, that’s the answer to this. It’s in your hands!”

She received muted applause, before saying: “So take your hands and get out there.”

The Labour defector immediately prompted online comparisons with Ricky Gervais’s character in The Office, with one saying the Enfield North MP had done Mr Gervais proud.

The moment wasn’t repeated on the Change UK Twitter feed.

Ms Ryan’s “Brent” moment comes as the new party continues to endure difficulties. On Wednesday, its lead candidate in Scotland for the European elections quit and urged voters to back the Liberal Democrats.

The centrist party has also suffered poor opinion poll ratings and was even criticised for the design of its campaign bus.
