CHANDIGARH: Government Multi-specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, will have a paediatric intensive care unit (ICU), with the urban planning department of the UT administration preparing and releasing the drawing of this ambitious project.
The engineering department will handle the construction, deciding the financial component by keeping all medical requirements in mind.
The 20-bed paediatric ICU is planned in the nursing building of the hospital. Ten of the beds will be on the ground floor and the rest on the first floor. An area for the doctors, support staff and others is earmarked, according to the plan.
“The nursing building has been lying vacant. So, it is the best site for this project. The project won’t be much expensive as it will require only some minor alterations, additions and medical equipment,” sources in the administration said.
Sources said the nursing building has ample space for the ICU, has parking space in front of it and is free of congestion. The paediatric ICU is also a part of the preparation to deal with a third wave of Covid-19 wave that is feared could target children. “The project was conceived a few months back, when all medical experts and government officials decided to strengthen the paediatric wings of the hospital to deal with Covid. Discussions were held and the project planned,” an official said.
Sources said like other departments, the hospital has huge footfall in its paediatric unit, raising hopes that this new section will prove beneficial. After the construction, doctors and staff for the new unit will be adjusted accordingly.
