CHANDIGARH: As many as 3,094 women riding two-wheelers without helmets were challaned from March 27 to July 16.
Police said they started the exercise only after conducting several awareness campaigns.
Police said they have been cancelling challans of women violators belonging to Sikh religion. However, the violator has to submit an ID proof showing “Kaur” in her surname, said cops, adding they have cancelled 10 challans.
On the other hand, police have started issuing challans for offences like violation of zebra crossing, talking over mobile phone, wrong lane driving and not wearing a seat belt through the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC). Earlier, challans for overspeeding and jumping red light jump were only being sent from it.
Uday Pal, DSP, traffic, they have been issuing challans for all visible traffic violations through the ICCC. Motorists are requested to follow the traffic rules while driving on the roads, he said.
Police have issued 90,567 challans — 56,197 for jumping red light jump and 34,370 for overspeeding — between March 27 and July 16, according to data. With high definition night vision cameras, traffic cops can issue challans during the night hours too.
As many as 15 traffic police officials have been working round-the-clock to keep a watch on important locations in the city and issue challans on automatic violations detected through cameras. Under the ICCC, more than 2000 CCTV cameras were installed in the city to keep a tab on traffic violators. Police officials said they have been issuing challans to other states’ vehicles too.
The ICCC, under the smart city project, was inaugurated by home minister Amit Shah on March 27 this year.
