Chandigarh: If house tax not paid in 10 days, taps to run dry

CHANDIGARH: Water connections will be disconnected if residential property tax defaulters do not pay the amount with interest and fee in 10 days, according to notices sent to 200 such persons by the municipal corporation (MC).

The property tax department has discussed the matter with the engineering department of the civic body. A highlevel meeting will soon be held for clarity on disconnecting the water connections.

“Since we can’t seal a residential building like we do in the case of a commercial one, we are going to take strict action against defaulters if they remain reluctant in paying their property tax during the stipulated time period. We have issued notices in the first lot and given people sufficient time of 10 days. If anybody has any problem with the amount or measurement of the property, we are ready to listen to their queries. But tax has to be deposited,” a senior official said.

The MC received Rs 36.06 crore property tax during this rebate period.
