Chandigarh: Few students show up in schools on day 1 of reopening

CHANDIGARH: After being closed for physical classes since the winter vacations due to the Covid surge, schools opened for classes X to XII from February 1 and for classes Nursery to IX from February 14.

Till now, the students had only been taking online classes. Students were also given the option to continue with online classes. However, few students turned up in class on the first day. Teachers expect the turnout to increase in the days to come.

More students attended school in government schools in villages and colonies than in sectors. Gurmeet Goldie, headmistress, Government High School, Kajehri, said that about 50% students in her school showed up. Seema Girdhar, principal, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas said that about 35% students came. He said that the strength of students was good in Class IX but less in classes VI and VII. According to Davinder Singh, principal, Government Model Senior Secondary School-35, only 10% to 15% students reached the school. However, he said that this was the trend on day one and the number would increase in the days to come.

Nina Pandey, principal, Gurukul Global School, said that attendance of students was around 39%. Gurnam Kaur, principal, Guru Nanak Public School-36, said that 38% students reached the school for physical classes.

Principal Kavita Das said that since exams in the school were starting next week, students have been called from next week as they did not want to disturb them. Atul Khanna, director, Strawberry Fields High School said that he had called students from February 17.
