Chandigarh: 'Deadly' curve on airport road to be straightened

MOHALI: One of the 92 dark spots on Mohali roads that has claimed 27 lives in three years is likely to lose the "deadly curve" status as the management of a gurdwara has reached consensus with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada) to allow it to straighten the airport road 'S' curve.

Gurdwara Mata Sundari headed by Balbir Singh, the chief of Budha Dal, had encroached upon the airport road land because of which the road had to be constructed in 'S' manner outside the gurdwara in 2011. The killer curve at airport road has snuffed out many lives, with almost 100 accidents in three years.

Experts have said it is quite possible that a driver tends to lose control over vehicle while negotiating the blind and sharp curve. The crash barriers installed by the Gmada have also broken and illegal cuts made, where commuters take U-turn while risking their lives.

Experts have said there was no curve in the master plan of the airport road. But the Punjab government failed to get the government land freed from the gurdwara.

Former executive engineer N S Kalsi said it was possible to straighten the road by constructing the new stretch on government land in Sector 77, opposite the existing curve.

A senior Gmada officer said, "We had approached the Gurdwara Mata Sundri management to find a solution for straightening of the deadly 'S' curve. After many years, Baba Balbir Singh has agreed to allow us to straighten the road. We are hopeful to start the work within three months."
