Chandigarh: Day after fire, Central Forensic Science Laboratory team inspects furniture market

CHANDIGARH: With the UT police probing the furniture market fire, a team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) visited the spot on Thursday. The CFSL team inspected the area and collected samples for technical and scientific evaluation that may also help in the police investigation.

“Since the statements of the shopkeepers and others could not help the police investigation much, we called the CFSL team. Their evaluation is crucial in this fire incident and we are hopeful of getting concrete evidence,” a police official told the TOI.

The reason for the Wednesday evening fire is still a mystery for the investigation agency and the Chandigarh municipal corporation. “It is too early to say anything,” sources in the MC said.

The fire and emergency services department of the MC is also preparing its report, explaining all aspects dealt by the firemen and other crucial factors. “Since it was a major incident, we are getting all relevant information. We are not involved in the police probe and our report will be separate. We will submit it to the chief fire officer,” sources in the department said.

A couple of fire tenders were stationed at the furniture market on Thursday evening too as a precautionary measure and were later recalled. The Chandigarh Congress has demanded compensation for the affected shopkeepers.
