Chandigarh: Cases spike to over 4-month high in city

CHANDIGARH: After February 12, the highest single-day spike of Covid cases was recorded on Tuesday, when 79 patients tested positive. On February 12, as many as 87 cases were logged and the positivity rate was 3.22%. Twenty-three patients are admitted to the hospitals in the city. Of them, three are on ventilators (two in PGI and one at GMCH) and the remaining on oxygen support.

“The rise in cases will continue for another few days. Testing has been increased and we are taking stock of the situation before we decide on decreasing the footfall in OPDs,” said Dr Suman Singh, director, health services, UT.

The active cases have reached 373. On Tuesday, 48 patients were discharged and the positivity rate was 5.79%. In the past 10 days, on an average, 960 samples were tested per day, while the positivity rate during the period was 4.5%.

“The daily cases can cross the 100-mark within the next few days as the transmission of infection is high. Those who are on ventilators have pre-existing comorbidities and most are fully vaccinated,” said an official in the UT health department.
