CHANDIGARH: The UT administration has decided to appoint Justice Jitendra Chauhan (retd) as a one-man inquiry committee to ascertain the facts behind the falling of a heritage tree at Carmel Convent School in Sector 9 that led to the death of a 16-year-old student.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit and attended by UT adviser Dharam Pal and other senior officials on Tuesday. Justice Chauhan would also fix responsibility and suggest remedial action. He had upheld the conviction of Haryana’s former top cop SPS Rathore in the infamous molestation case, and his judgment was dubbed as path-breaking. During his tenure of nearly 13 years, Justice Chauhan has delivered more than 31,000 substantive judgments. Born on June 6, 1959, and elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court in July 2008, Justice Chauhan had retired in June 2021.
In the meantime, Purohit announced a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the family of Hirakshi, the victim, Rs 10 lakh for the seriously injured, including school attendant battling for life at PGI, and Rs 1 lakh each for students who suffered minor injuries.
Purohit along with Pal, DGP Praveer Ranjan and other senior officers visited both injured girls and school attendant at PGI on Tuesday.
