Chandigarh: Biogas plant at jail opens today

CHANDIGARH: UT adviser Dharam Pal will inaugurate the city’s first biogas plant at Burail jail on Monday.

The project has come up at Rs 19 lakh. It will reduce LPG consumption of the jail by up to 50%, helping save Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh monthly.

With this new venture, food preparation will shift from LPG to biogas. Other food and sweet items that jail inmates prepare for commercial purpose and sell through an outlet in Sector 22 will also be prepared through this plant.

“The biogas plant is a good initiative. It is equipped with multiple features. It will have a flow meter to monitor its running and functioning and use cow dung on a daily basis. The pipeline is directly connected with the kitchen. Moreover, the entire cost will be recovered in less than a year as the jail will save huge amounts in gas consumption,” said Debendra Dalai, director, environment, UT.

As a gaushala (cow shelter) is situated just near the jail, the authority will take cow dung from there on a daily basis to run the plant on a regular basis.

The sludge that will come out after using cow dung will be used as manure for gardens and green areas in the jail. “It will be very good for gardening and even for kitchen garden. So nothing will be wasted in this project,” an official said
