'Chancer' caught on camera allegedly stealing Christmas tree from Welsh forest

It is a busy time of year for Christmas tree sellers, but one person who decided to "help themselves" to a tree from a Welsh forest will be getting a call from police.

Officers from North Wales Police's rural crime team have published a picture of a "chancer" who was caught on camera taking a Christmas tree from a Welsh forest.

It shows a picture of a chopped down tree strapped to the roof of a car as it leaves the forest.

They shared the image on social media saying: "This 'chancer' decided rather than pay for this year's Xmas tree, they would help themselves to their choice from Cloceanog Forest.

"I suppose they didn't consider the numerous trail cameras! Huge mistake. Well someone will be calling soon... and it won't be Santa."

The 15,000 acre (6,000 hectare) forest near Ruthin lies in Conwy and Denbighshire and is home to a red squirrel population.

The Woodland Trust says it is an offence for anyone to fell a tree without a proper licence.

It says those who damage or carry out work on a tree without permission could potentially face a fine of up to £20,000.
