Chancellor Rishi Sunak to unveil plans 'to continue protecting jobs through winter' tomorrow as furlough scheme draws to a close

Rishi Sunak will update MPs on the government's plans "to continue protecting jobs through the winter" on Thursday.

It comes as pressure mounts to extend the furlough scheme which has prevented millions of employee's losing their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme is set to come to an end in October at a cost of more than £34bn to the Treasury.

But with more restrictions coming into force tomorrow (September 24) on the hospitality industry, fears or growing for people's livelihoods.

Mr Sunak said briefly on Wednesday: "As our response to coronavirus adapts, tomorrow afternoon I will update the House of Commons on our plans to continue protecting jobs through the winter."

He has also cancelled his budget speech amid the uncertainty.

There are reports the Chancellor is working on a new German-style scheme to avoid mass unemployment once furlough ends.

Plans would reportedly see the government and firms share the cost of topping up wages for employees only able to work part-time due to the pandemic.

The Prime Minister said earlier today that Mr Sunak has pledged to be drawing up "creative and imaginative measures to help people through this crisis."

It is understood he is weighing up a number of possible measures to subsidise workers' wages, having consulted unions and business groups.

And Boris Johnson's official spokesman told reporters: "We have always said that we keep our support under review and that it will be adapted as the circumstances evolve."
