Chancellor Rishi Sunak to give update on Government's coronavirus furlough scheme on Tuesday

Workers and employers will get a key update on the furlough scheme, currently paying the wages of over 6.3 million people, on Tuesday.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will address the nation about the scheme tomorrow, the Prime Minister has said.

Nearly a quarter of Britian's employees were put on furlough in response to the Covid-19 lockdown. The cost of claims had soared to £8bn by May 3, according to HMRC.

Those relying on the scheme are now waiting to find out what will happen after June 30, the current end date.

Although workers in some industries, including construction, have been told to return to work this week, many businesses will not be allowed to reopen until July at the very earliest - meaning there is little chance they will be able to pay wages until at least a month after the scheme is currently set to end.

The Prime Minister told MPs that they will hear from Mr Sunak on the Government’s on Tuesday.

Mr Johnson said: “I do think that the furloughing scheme has been one of the most remarkable features of the Government’s response and it is unlike anything seen internationally.

“Six-and-a-half million people currently are being supported. It is absolutely right that we should do it.

“I don’t want to anticipate what (Mr Sunak) is going to say but the House will hear more about that tomorrow.”

Among the changes being predicted are a possible reduction in the percentage of wage that will be paid, and the offer for people to be able to work part-time and be furloughed part-time, allowing the employer and the Government to share the wage bill.
