Chancellor Rishi Sunak referred to independent advisor in tax affairs row

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked the independent advisor on ministers' interests to investigate Rishi Sunak. It comes at the Chancellor's request.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Sunak asked for Lord Geidt to review all his declarations of interest since he became a minister in 2018 to ensure they had been properly stated. Asked if Lord Geidt had begun his investigation into the Chancellor, a spokeswoman for No 10 said: “I’m not aware of whether Lord Geidt himself has begun his work.

“But I can confirm that the Prime Minister has agreed to the request from the Chancellor for Lord Geidt to undertake this work.” But the spokeswoman added the PM had full confidence in Mr Sunak.

Mr Sunak had asked Mr Johnson to refer him to Lord Geidt after days of criticism to do with his wife's tax status and his possession of a US residency green card. It came after he was appointed to Number 11.

He asked for an investigation into whether all his interests were "properly declared". Meanwhile, Mr Sunak has maintained that he had "always followed the rules" and that he hoped the review would "provide further clarity".
