Chance the Rapper has fired back at criticism from Spike Lee, calling the director a “lame” and a “liar”.

The war of words started when Chance criticised Lee’s latest film Chi-Raq on Twitter in December 2015, writing that it was “exploitative and problematic” in its treatment of the rapper’s home city. In a series of tweets, Chance elaborated on his problems with the film, which is a satirical musical that deals with Chicago gang violence. Chance wrote: “You don’t do any work with the children of Chicago. You don’t live here, you’ve never watched someone die here.”

Lee hit back by questioning Chance’s ties to the city’s mayoral office, and reportedly expanded on these criticisms during a recent screening. According to XXL, the director said: “Chance the Rapper’s a fraud – straight-up fraud. He puts himself up as a speaker of the people, but that means you have to put truths that you see. That doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what you talk about.”

Now Chance has upped the ante, saying that Chi-Raq is “a sexist and racist movie” and a “flop”. He wrote: “Come on now. This guy promoting this offensive unsuccessful flop of a movie ... about the Southside ... in fucking Evanston ... And then get mad when students at the screening challenge him on his sexist, and RACIST movie and he wanna point the finger at me ... Boy. You are a lame. But more importantly a liar.”

Chance concluded by claiming Lee had “begged” him to be in the film, writing: “Now stop tweeking for I get to releasing audio of you begging me to be in that trash-ass movie.”
