Chance for Saliba or return for forgotten man: How Arsenal's defence could look without Gabriel

Arsenal will be without Gabriel for their trip to Goodison Park to play Everton in the Premier League.

The Brazilian became the Gunners' third player in five games to be sent off in their 1-1 draw with Southampton and will serve a one match suspension as a result.

Luckily though for Mikel Arteta he currently has a squad composed of nine centre backs from which to chose so he has plenty options going in to Saturday's match.

Dinos Mavropanos is on loan, while Sokratis hasn't been registered in the Premier League squad so they're out, but still leave the Spaniard with seven options to chose from.

He also has Hector Bellerin back from suspension so right across the defensive line there are plenty of routes he could take his Arsenal team selection.

Here football.london takes a look at how the Gunners' backline could line up against Everton

Return for Luiz

The man who came on after Gabriel's red card yesterday was David Luiz.

The Brazilian has been missing since the sustaining a cut to his forehead after a clash of heads with Raul Jimenez in the defeat to Wolves.

However, it was interesting to note that the Gunners' switched to a back three against Southampton. This is a formation that suits the Brazilian perfectly.

He arguably played the best football of his career in the middle of a back three under Antonio Conte at Chelsea and helped the Gunners to FA Cup and Community Shield victories playing their earlier this year.

Rob Holding would continue on the right while Kieran Tierney could continue in the hybrid centre-back/wing-back role that he has specialised in so effectively since Mikel Arteta first deployed a back three after the defeat to Brighton last season.

Mari comes back

Pablo Mari was Mikel Arteta's first signing after becoming Arsenal manager was that of Pablo Mari from Flamengo.

Since then the Brazilian has become something of a forgotten man at the Emirates due to an unfortunate ankle injury he sustained in the first game back after project restart.

When playing a back four Mikel Arteta likes to have possessional balance at the back by playing a left-footed centre back on the left hand side, and a right footed centre-back on the right.

In the absence of Gabriel, Mari is the only other left-footed centre back at the club right now. This could be to his benefit if Arsenal end up switching formation again.

He has come through Europa League games against Rapid Vienna and Dundalk relatively unscathed, and Saturday may be the chance for him to make his Premier League return.

Chance for Saliba?

This would be totally out of the blue and is almost definitely not going to happen, but the suspension to Gabriel means William Saliba could be called up to the first team.

The 19-year-old is not part of Arsenal's Europa League squad, but as an under-21 player is eligible to play in the Premier League, so technically it could happen.

It would represent a complete change of course from Mikel Arteta who has not even included the Frenchman in a matchday squad this season.

However, he has admitted that he feels Saliba is ready to play very soon.

"Whenever we have the spaces and we believe that he's ready to play with us," Arteta told football.london, in response to when Saliba could make his senior debut.

"To be fair, he's made massive improvements in the last few months and it's been a really tricky situation for him."

It seems impossibly unlikely that Arsenal will risk injuring a player who looks set to leave for some game time out on loan in January, but here's how a back four with him in it could look.
