Chance for Kasey Palmer to showcase his talent for Bristol City against Northampton Town

Bristol City will ring the changes for round two of this year's EFL Cup competition, and it gives the chance for so-far fringe players to press their claims for more first-team involvement.

And Kasey Palmer is precisely the player that could remind City supporters about the mercurial talent he possesses.

While head coach Lee Johnson did not seem a fan and only started the 23-year-old in 11 Chmpionship games last season, some fans may believe that the attacking midfielder has a long way to go to show why the club forked out a hefty £2m fee and accompanying top (relatively) wages in the summer of 2019 to bring the ex-Chelsea man to BS3 permanently.

But that is not the case across all of the club, with new head coach Dean Holden still retaining belief that Palmer has the ability to succeed in the Championship and become a top player for the Robins.

Indeed Palmer - who has a good relationship with the new head coach, as many of the Bristol City squad do - will be handed the chance to face Northampton Town on Wednesday evening and press his claims for regular first-team involvement.

Indeed, some inside the West Country club have likened the player to shooting star Eberechi Eze who is only a year younger but has moved to the Premier League for a big money fee after a standout 2019/20 camapign.

Palmer has the natural gifts to replicate much of Eze's game: vision, a sublime touch, the ability to drift past markers and light up a game. Few players in the English second tier have those proficiencies, but there is a challenge to the former Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers man. Knuckle down, hammer training, find consistency, stay patient and hone his game.

The prize is slotting into the City side who now play a 3-5-2 formation that looks to suit Palmer down to the ground.

Though Andi Weimann and Jamie Paterson have so far nailed the two attacking midfield slots, Palmer, Liam Walsh and Adam Nagy may have something to say about that during this campaign, with Joe Morrell expected to contest the holding midfield position with Joe Williams - although these two could play together or further forward or even as a rearranged midfield pivot.

Palmer looks to have just the skill-set to stand in for Paterson, even, should City's top scorer this season -so far - be unavailable and need a rest.

Walsh, Williams and Morrell are all injured for Tuesday night's game but young talent Tyreeq Bakinson is another to surely be involved at some stage against Keith Curle's Cobblers.

Chris Brunt and Nagy may also be fielded, with Aston Villa awaiting the winners of the upcoming League Cup encounter. Over to you, lads.
