Charles Gillies had popped into the old Silver Lounge cafe, just next to the Regal cinema in the High Street.

He caught the eye of a pretty young waitress Anna Gillies and the pair quickly started dating.

Had he not been attending night school classes round the corner, they may never have bumped into each other.

They married in 1961 at Glenburn Parish Church and have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

The pair now live in Mossblown near Ayr, have two children and six grandchildren.

South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie sent her congratulations along with a card and flowers.
