Championship transfer rumours - Dwight Gayle puts clubs on red alert, Stoke set to lose Jack Butland

The Championship season is rapidly approaching it’s conclusion, with just a few weeks of action remaining.

While some clubs eye dates in the play-offs or seek to avoid relegation, others can start to plan their business for the summer ahead of the opening of the transfer window.

There is already plenty of rumours floating about and we have gathered some of the latest below.

Dwight Gayle will have options this summer - but staying at Newcastle seems unlikely to be one of them.

The 28-year-old has impressed during his loan spell with West Brom this season but the Chronicle Live report that the forward is not a part of Rafael Benitez’s plans at St James Park.

While making his move to the Hawthorns permanent seems the likeliest option, the report also claims that Fulham are interested in signing Gayle upon their return to the Championship next season.

Another side dropping down to the second tier next season are Huddersfield Town and they are already planning for life outside of the Premier League.

According to Hull Live , the Terriers have identified Fraizer Campbell as a potential signing in the coming summer after he has netted 12 times for Hull City.

The 31-year-old’s contract at the KCOM Stadium is set to expire in June and the Tigers will need him to take a pay cut if he is to re-sign.

But the draw of his hometown club Huddersfield could be enough to convince Campbell to leave Hull in spite of his most productive season in over a decade.

Meanwhile, Stoke City are facing a battle to hold onto their number one shot-stopper as Premier League side Bournemouth are said to be interested in Jack Butland.

The England international would set the Cherries back around £15m according to Football Insider , with the Potters resigned to Butland leaving as they failed to mount a serious promotion challenge this season.

He would be signed as a replacement for Bournemouth’s current number one, Artur Boruc, whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign, with Eddie Howe sending scouts to watch the 26-year-old over the weekend.

Similarly, Nick Powell will be out of contract at the end of the season after rejecting a new deal and the Wigan Athletic forward is expected to turn down the chance to play in the Bundesliga in favour of remaining in the UK.

Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig are both interested in the 25-year-old according to TEAMtalk but Powell would rather not move his young family to a foreign country.

That opens the door for Norwich City, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday to make a move for Powell.

But they will have to compete with Premier League sides Brighton and Burnley, while Scotland’s Old Firm clubs Celtic and Rangers are also believed to be interested.

And finally, Aston Villa must make a call on the future of Ritchie De Laet with his contract also set to expire in two months.

The Belgian is currently on loan with Melbourne City in Australia and has bagged seven goals in 23 games Down Under.

According to Birmingham Live , the door has not been completely closed on the 30-year-old extending his deal and returning to Villa Park.

But it seems most likely that he will leave for free, with rival scouts aware of his impending availability.
