Championship transfer gossip: Leeds United target Premier League defender; Sheffield United and Aston Villa set to miss out on striker; Stoke City to sell record signing

Clubs around the Championship may be deep in the pre-season and playing friendly matches at the moment but the transfer window remains a huge focus.

Here is the latest transfer news round-up on the second tier.

Stoke flop set to leave

Stoke midfielder Gianelli Imbula could be about to call time on his inauspicious spell at the club.

The French midfielder was a club record £18.3m buy when he joined from Porto in February 2016, but he played just 28 times for the club over the next two seasons.

Loan moves to Toulouse and Rayo Vallecano followed, but the  Stoke Sentinel  now claim that he’ll join Belgium’s Club Brugge on a permanent deal for £5.35m.

Brighton midfielder heads out on loan

Brighton’s Jayson Molumby, the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 captain, has joined Millwall on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old midfielder is Lions boss Neil Harris’s sixth signing of the summer.

Leeds chase defender

Leeds United have joined the fight to sign Ben Gibson from Burnley, according to reports.

The Whites are believed to be in the market for a new centre-back after selling Pontus Jansson to Brentford.

Reports now suggest that Leeds are one of several Championship sides to have registered their interest in the former Middlesbrough player.

Burnley are open to let the defender leave Turf Moor after a rough debut season at the club following his £15m move last summer.

Boro close to signing

Middlesbrough are close to signing former Chelsea defender Todd Kane on a free transfer.

Kane spent last season on loan at Hull City, featuring 39 times for the Tigers in the Championship.

But the 25-year-old's contract at Chelsea was not renewed and now Boro are set to pounce, according to Football Insider.

Neal Maupay celebrates scoring for Brentford against Leeds (PA)

Latest on Maupay's future

Brentford could part ways with star striker Neal Maupay this summer amid interest aplenty in the 22-year-old.

Maupay bagged 25 league goals last season for Brentford in the Championship and that has led to speculation about his future.

Sheffield United and Aston Villa have been linked with his services but now Brighton are said to be the favourites to secure his signature.

Cardiff City make bid

Cardiff City have offered £1.5m to sign Gavin Whyte from Oxford United.

The 23-year-old is highly rated and has impressed since making the switch from Northern Irish club Crusaders to Oxford last summer.

Football Insider are now reporting that Cardiff have made a seven-figure offer for the midfielder.
