Championship star makes Leeds United claim which won't sit well with some players

Troy Deeney has suggested Ian Poveda's Leeds United teammates will have questioned why he didn't go down in the penalty area against Chelsea.

The Whites winger was tripped inside the box at Stamford Bridge but chose to stay on his feet and VAR opted not to reward him.

The challenge has brought back the debate over whether players are punished for being too honest by not going to ground, which in turn encourages diving.

Deeney believes that Poveda should have gone to the ground after a clear touch from Chilwell and even suggested his Leeds teammates would have been asking why he didn't.

"'You didn’t fancy going down there?’" Deeney told talkSPORT, impersonating a Leeds teammate.

“I think diving is part and parcel of the game. There was a great example when [Conor] Coady went down last night and he wasn’t booked.

"There’s no deterrent not do it again.”

Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy agreed, suggesting Poveda was naive for not going down.

"I agree but some people would say he’s stupid. He’s cost his team a point as he knows he could go down and it would be a penalty at the moment with the rules being what they are."

Tim Cahill, by contrast, applauded Poveda for his honesty and blamed VAR for not awarding the penalty.

He said: "This is where you’ve got to give footballers credit. For me, in this instance, this is what all footballers should do.

"They’ll be encouraged to go down but it’s up to VAR because it’s just not right. Poveda deserves a lot of credit, he’s Bielsa’s player and he’s making players stay on their feet.

"It’s a great example of the way the game should be played."
