Championship salary cap plans for Nottingham Forest set to ramp up on Monday in EFL vote

The EFL are set to tweak how their member clubs will vote on future changes to their fair play regulations in a move that could see Nottingham Forest and their Championship rivals operate under a salary cap sooner than first thought.

There has been plenty of talk in recent weeks about bringing in a cap for second division clubs as the coronavirus pandemic threatens the future of their very existence.

In recent years, the average player salary in the Championship has skyrocketed, putting added strain on club finances during this extraordinary period in history - and EFL boss Rick Parry is keen to fix the issue.

However, fine print buried in EFL regulation currently makes it hard to implement such a rule.

With most EFL votes, a majority of 51 per cent is needed amongst all member clubs, and from the Championship, to sway a decision.

But for changes to divisional fair play legislation to be passed, a category a salary cap would fall under, it is understood that a 75 per cent majority must approve.

That large majority looks unlikely to be reached in the Championship with the stakes so high and so many clubs intent on spending their way to Premier League promotion.

And so Parry, according to a report by Sportmail, will next week look to slide the voting target down to 67 per cent - a more realistic marker.

That would require only 46 EFL clubs out of the 71 to vote in favour of the salary cap and only 15 from the Championship to opt not to veto it.EFL clubs are expected to vote on the changes as early as Monday.

The current plans for a salary cap are understood to be between £15m and £20m per-year for Championship clubs with further limitations on squad depth
