Championship's most deadly player explains why he loves playing against Bristol City

No player in the English second tier has been involved in more goals than Daniel Johnson this season. The Preston North End midfielder, and a former player of Lee Johnson's at Oldham Athletic, netted his fifth goal of the season at the weekend from the penalty spot against the Robins.

And with his three assists so far, that makes the 26-year-old the most potent player in the Championship currently.

Unfortunately, Daniel Johnson enjoys playing against the Robins and that long City run of 13 games without a win against the Lancashire side has often featured good performances from the Kingston-born former Aston Villa man.

Following the 3-3 draw on Saturday, he elaborated on this.

"It's always nice to get on the scoresheet," said the Preston midfield playmaker.

"Yeah, I do kind of enjoy playing against Bristol [City] but it would have been better if we'd have got the win today.

"We've come back to beat Bristol [City] before and other teams, and that shows the resilience in our squad. We don't want to get beaten by anyone at home," he said.

Of the mind games ahead of the second Preston penalty (awarded for an apparent Ashley Williams handball), Johnson explained that Dan Bentley tried to put him off by referencing the research he had done into 'DJ''s penalties.

"To be fair, after the game he [Bentley] said 'it's quite hard reading you because I've watched all of your pens and you go left and you go right - it's always a gamble really'.

"And when I put the ball down he was just staring at me. But that's what I do, just stare at the keeper. Wait for him to dive one way and I go the other way. And that's all it was, to be honest," said the former Crystal Palace youth player who says he is yet to miss a spot kick in his career.

Bristol Live asked if facing his former boss was a motivation and a factor as to why he enjoys taking on the side from Ashton Gate.

Daniel Johnson has netted in both the last two matches between the sides, and he also played under Lee Johnson at Oldham Athletic, back in 2014/15.

"We had a fantastic time at Oldham and I've only got good things to say about Lee Johnson. But it's not got anything to do with that," said Daniel Johnson.

"Obviously we're on a little run with Bristol [City] at the moment and we're unbeaten in that and obviously I know a few of their boys so it's always good to get one up on your mates.

"They're a good side. They've got some good players and they play to their strengths. So 100 per cent [he could see both teams being in the mix for the top six at the end of the season]," he explained.

Bristol City face Preston North End at Ashton Gate in their final Championship game of the season and it will be an opportunity for the Robins to make Daniel Johnson not enjoy a game against City for once.
