Championship rumours: Birmingham defender wanted by Celtic, Stoke defender goes out on loan again

The Championship transfer window may have closed for business over a fortnight ago but there is still time for clubs in Europe and in League One and Two to bolster their squads ahead of the window slamming shut on Monday.

It was agreed upon earlier this year that Premier League and Championship clubs would see their time to bolster their squads closed before the Premier League campaign kicked-off.

But teams in the bottom two tiers of England and in Europe still have time to conclude their summer recruitment.

Here are some of the latest rumours from the second tier…

Celtic eye up Birmingham City youngster

Celtic have submitted a bid to sign Birmingham City youngster Mitchell Roberts ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, according to Football Insider.

The Scottish giants are hopeful of beating a host of English clubs in the race to sign the 18-year-old defender, with the Celts hopeful of concluding a deal ahead of Monday’s cut-off.

Birmingham are understood to be willing to part with Roberts should they receive a six-figure fee.

Wimmer departs Stoke on loan

Stoke City centre-back Kevin Wimmer has left the Bet365 Stadium to join Belgain club Royal Excel Mouscron on loan.

The defender spent last season on loan with Hannover and seemingly has no future with the Potters.

Stoke did sign Wimmer for £15m from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017.

Royals youngster joins Coventry on loan

Reading defender Tennai Watson has joined Coventry City on loan until January.

The 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon, had been training with the Royals’ first-team in the summer but has not done enough to force his way into the first-team.

The right-back made his Reading debut three years ago but has only featured a further six times.
