Championship rivals' stance on in-demand striker emerges amid Nottingham Forest 'interest'

Nottingham Forest-linked Charlie Wyke has plenty of suitors this summer - but it seems Middlesbrough are not among them.

That won’t necessarily alter the Reds’ chances of signing him, given Scottish giants Celtic are said to be in pole position to secure his signature.

But the report detailing Boro’s stance does provide an interesting assessment of the striker from one of Forest’s Championship rivals.

Wyke is available as a free agent as his Sunderland contract comes to an end.

Reports suggest the Reds, Cardiff City and Millwall have held talks with the 28-year-old, as have the Black Cats as they tried to extend his stay.

Ipswich Town, Russian outfit CSKA Moscow and Boro are also among those credited with an interest.

However, the latter’s thoughts on Wyke have been outlined in a report by TeessideLive.

They say the forward’s goal haul of 31 in all competitions last term meant he was on Middlesbrough’s “initial list of potential targets”.

However, it is said, after watching him, boss Neil Warnock “made a quick decision that he wasn't for him and the striker has never featured highly on Boro's summer wishlist”.

Wyke finished as his team’s top scorer, though couldn’t quite get them over the line in their bid for promotion to the second tier, as they were beaten by Lincoln City in the play-off semi-finals.

Earlier this week it was claimed Celtic had held initial talks with the front man and were ready to “firm up a formal offer”.

Forest have been linked with plenty of strikers this summer as manager Chris Hughton looks to reshape his squad, but they are yet to make their first signing.
