Championship preparing for 27 game season as October start proposal set to pass

A proposal to play a 27 game season in the Scottish Championship is set to pass on Monday morning, according to reports.

BBC Sportsound revealed that eight out of the 10 current second-tier clubs pledged their support for a campaign with nine fewer games than a regular 36 game season in which every team plays each other four times.

Under the plans, the season will be pushed back to the middle of October to give clubs more time to prepare.

It's thought that the financial impact of coronavirus testing and the possibility of having to play games without fans present have been the key reasons behind the delay and shortening of the season.

Relegated Hearts and promoted Raith Rovers voted as part of the second-tier bloc, and it's likely that the Edinburgh side will have been one of the clubs to vote against the resolution as they hold out for league reconstruction.

Clubs across the SPFL have also been asked to indicate by Monday morning whether they support or oppose a 14-10-10-10 league reconstruction model.

The proposals supported by Hearts chairman Ann Budge would keep the Tynecastle side in the Premiership while also promoting Dundee United and Inverness.
