Championship match abandoned after player suffers serious injury

Saturday's NIFL Championship game between Ballinamallard United and Institute had to be abandoned following a serious injury.

Mallards midfielder Niall Grace suffered a suspected broken leg during the early stages of the game at Ferney Park.

Grace injured himself in a challenge on Institute youngster Liam Walsh after just 10 minutes, which resulted in the former Stute player being red-carded.

Referee Shane McGonigle called the game off after a delay of around 40 minutes as Grace received treatment before being taken to hospital.

Ballinamallard said in a statement: "Unfortunately our match today against Institute had to be abandoned due to a serious injury to Mallards player Niall Grace.

"The player appeared to get his foot stuck in the ground while making a challenge, it looked a poor challenge but not intentional from either player. Sadly Niall Grace sustained the serious injury. We wish him well and a speedy recovery.

"Thanks to those supporters who demonstrated patience and consideration and above all their concern for the injured player.

"Get well Niall."

Meanwhile, Institute boss Brian Donaghey told the Derry Journal : "I did fear the worst when I heard the noise after the tackle and I wasn't sure if it was Liam or Niall.

"Having worked with Niall and I know him personally, he's a fantastic lad and I have a lot of time for him and our best wishes go to him.

"Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and hopefully it isn't as bad as first feared."

It is the second time this season a NI Football League game has been abandoned due to a serious injury.

Last month's Premiership fixture between Glenavon and Carrick Rangers was waved off in the second half after Carrick defender Lee McNulty suffered a serious dislocated ankle.
