Championship fixtures hit by Covid-19 outbreaks as Millwall and Reading games postponed

Championship clubs Millwall and Reading are the latest to experience Covid-19 outbreaks, leading to their matches on Saturday being postponed.

Preston were due to travel to The Den while Reading were scheduled to face Luton in the club’s 150th anniversary fixture, both of which will now be rearranged. A new date is yet to be announced.

On Wednesday, the EFL said it will “review the circumstances surrounding the postponement and work with affected clubs to assist them through this challenging period”.

Both teams reported “significant” rises of Covid cases within their clubs, with Reading also suffering an outbreak in their Under-23s side. The Royals’ anniversary celebrations will instead take place at the February 12 game against Coventry.

The two matches follow Queens Park Rangers postponing this week’s games with Sheffield United and Swansea.

A Millwall statement read: “At present, only a minority of those who have returned positive test results are experiencing any sort of symptoms and they are very mild at worst.

“The decision to postpone has been made following extensive dialogue with the EFL, Public Health England and the club’s safety advisory group.”
