Championship clubs urge EFL to hit Sheffield Wednesday hard over stadium sale

A number of Championship clubs are urging the English Football League to impose a serious points deduction Sheffield Wednesday, according to a fresh report from Sky Sports News.

The Owls, who currently lie 12th in the Championship table, were charged with misconduct by the EFL back in November after their Hillsborough stadium was sold to club owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Whilst no current EFL ruling states that no such activity cannot be done in an attempt to get around Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) rules, the charge related to "how and when" the sale of Hillsborough was carried out.

The Owls claim to have sold Hillsborough during the 2017/18 season for about £60m, helping them record a pre-tax profit of £2.5m for the 2017/18 season.

However, an investigation revealed that, according to Land Registry documents, the purchase of Hillsborough by Chansiri was made nearly a year later and Wednesday were charged with misconduct and a breach of the financial rules.

Since being charged in November, the Owls have claimed that the charges against them are "unlawful" and have said they will be "vigorously defended."

Now, though, in a fresh twist, a number of Championship clubs have asked the EFL to impose a serious points deduction on Wednesday, should they be found guilty of of misconduct by an independent disciplinary commission over the sale of Hillsborough.

Should Wednesday be found guilty, a points deduction seems inevitable, with league guidelines allowing up to a 12-point deduction depending on the size of any financial failure.

Right now, Wednesday sit 12th in the Championship table, 14 points above the relegation zone, meaning a deduction of 12 points would throw them right amongst the fight for survival.
