Championship boss lavishes praise on Leeds United's Mallik Wilks and teases transfer plan

Leeds United forward Mallik Wilks has been hailed as "a good player" by Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel as speculation continues to link the Tykes with a move for the Whites youngster.

The 20-year-old academy product spent the 2018/19 season on loan with Doncaster Rovers where he was named Social Media Player of the Year by fans for his performances, scoring 16 goals in 53 appearances as they made the League One play-offs.

His showing there has caught the eye of newly-promoted Barnsley however, who finished second in the third tier to secure a return to the Championship under Stendel.

The German guided the club to the top two in his first season in charge and is now looking to strengthen his options as his side prepare to push on in 2019/20.

Barnsley have been linked with a move for Wilks in recent weeks and, speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven programme, Stendel professed his admiration for the striker's performances, while teasing his side would be considering their transfer options in the immediate future.

"I think he is a very good player," he said. "When I [look] back on last season, I think the games against Doncaster, for me, both the home game and the away game, were difficult games and very close.

"He is one player who played very well against us. He is a good player. We have some good players in our head and maybe we can sign one or two players that we want.

"We will see in the next weeks what we can do, who we can sign and which players want to come to Barnsley."
