Champions League winner 'opened the champagne' to celebrate Newcastle 'target' Kamara staying at Marseille

Champions League winner Eric Di Meco says he "opened the champagne" when the summer transfer window slammed shut.

The former Marseille player, who lifted the Champions League with the club in 1993, was over the moon to see Newcastle target Boubacar Kamara remain on the south coast of France.

Kamara was linked with a loan move to the Magpies and their Premier League rivals Wolves, but no move would transpire.

Both clubs wanted to explore a loan with an option to buy for the French Under-21's midfielder.

However, neither side were able to do a deal for the Marseille man and he's being touted for a big future.

Di Meco told La Provence: “The day after transfer deadline day, I saw he hadn’t signed anywhere, I opened the champagne!

"Kamara, I see him playing in a big club and becoming really good.

"The way he imposed himself in this team, the personality he has, his ability to come out with the ball cleanly even under pressure, his devotion… He has everything, this kid!”

Arsenal and Manchester United were among the latest list of clubs reportedly keeping an eye on the 21-year-old defensive midfielder.
